Public Service Announcement #2

OtakuDad - its been a busy week...

OtakuDad - it's been a busy week...

I wish to publicly apologize for the lack of enbloggenation going on here.  I will write more soon (and yes, finally comment on the Hell story), after I get some sleep and some time.  (I mean, time…after sleep, that is…)

It’s been a crazy holiday, and time has gotten away from me all too often.  I’ve had a couple great ideas and I will write on those shortly, but perhaps in a couple days… (1) My computer is on the fritz…big time.  (2) I have no time.  (3) I’m exhausted.  (4) AAARGH!!!  I have no time!

So, expect coolness soon, but not yet.  I will tweet/facebook-status/secret-decoder-ring/smoke-signal when I post again.  Expect it within the week.

Until then…stay classy, internet!

A Very Humpday Christmas Flash

26 12 2008

For your (belated) Christmas Humpday Flash selection, I bring you the latest in the WarBears saga: “WarBears Adventures: An A.R. Xmas,” from Kongregate.

Its a Very WarBears Christmas Special!

It's a Very WarBears Christmas Special!

The WarBears series has always meant good old-skool puzzle-solving, of the point-and-click-adventure type, and this shorter, holiday themed game is no different. There’s a couple of cheat-y moments that you just have to kind of hunt around, but that’s par for the course for this genre of game. I highly recommend playing all of the series (They’re all good, and well written) but to whet your appetite, definitely try out this Christmas episode! Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

26 12 2008

Sorry I’ve been away for so long. It’s been a crazy week or so, between working on a couple videos for the church, as well as of course, Christmas with my wife’s family, my brothers/brother’s wives and kids/mom/dad, my extended family, and of course, my own wife and kids!

But now I’m back, and (SO VERY) happy to say that I’m going to be building a new computer. I’m super excited for the opportunity (thanks mostly to my mom and dad for providing my most requested gift, Fry’s gift cards, and some other Christmas fundage!)

My New Computer (Man, I miss the Apple IIe days)

So, OtakuDad needs your help!  Let’s build the best rig (my) money can buy! (Details on specifications/requirements after the jump!)

Video Games Are Bad For You. Unless They're Good.

22 12 2008

The Wii Is Good For You. The Wii Is Bad For You.

The Wii Is Good For You. The Wii Is Bad For You.

I bring you two conflicting stories today, both brought to light by Kotaku.

First, is a sensationalist piece that your mom probably read, telling us how Video Games are terrible things, and that innovation like the Wii, is doing nothing more than PUTTING AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE IN THE HOSPITAL, PER WEEK.  My favorite part of the story?  When this expert in medicine they interview suggests that people stretch before they play.  Yeah, because the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (but CDCaP doesn’t have that nice ring to it))  didn’t just put out a paper that suggests that stretching is probably not so good for you…Nice.

But, to contrast that story, we have one that you’ll likely tell your mom in retort, when you want to bring that new PS3, 360 or Wii over to Grandma’s house for Christmas Dinner, that Video Games May Do the Aging Brain Good!

I figure, that even if both are right, then this is the right time to bring Wiis into every hospital around the world.  I mean, this way, the elderly get smarter and those who get hurt are only a nurse’s-call-button away from help.

1983 Ruled! Want Proof? Check This out!

19 12 2008

I think I may have found my favorite gaming site, ever.  The Retroist has all sorts of retro goodness going on.  But Shawn Elliott from 2K Boston (formerly of GFW Magazine/1UP.com) tipped me off, via Twitter, of this gem:

Scans of the Video Game section of the 1983 Sears Wishbook

The Vectrex! The Self-Contained System With Graphics You Cant Get Outside Of An Arcade!

The Vectrex! The Self-Contained System With Graphics You Can't Get Outside Of An Arcade!

Totally.  Crazy.  Awesome.

I so wish I had like half of everything in this photo selection.  It’s truly retro-goodness in all of its 1980s glory.  Simply Amazing.  And for those of you born after 1983?  You simply have no idea.  Really.  I mean this with respect, but this was like, the golden age.  Nintendo was about to break onto the scene, and gaming was very much up in the air.  (Was it simply a fad or was it going to be something that would build careers and lifestyles?  At this time, no one knew, and it was pretty safe to say that back then, no one ever thought it would be the thriving, billion-dollar industry that it is today.)

So, let’s hop on the wayback machine, thanks to The Retroist, and remember the good old days when there was the console wars were fought dirty…when it wasn’t HD vs. SD, but instead joystick vs. paddle controller…when Sears could put out a total rip-off of the Atari 2600 and legally get away with it somehow…Ahh, good times.

Humpday Flash #4 – PowerPool

PowerPool By NinjaKiwi

PowerPool By Ninja Kiwi

For this week’s flash goodness, I humbly give you PowerPool, presented by Kongregate and developed by Ninja Kiwi.  It’s a familiar game to anyone who has played pool on a console or web browser before, but with the square playing field, as well as some interesting “special balls”, it’s got some variety to it that is refreshing.  I was hooked!  Hope you enjoy it!  You can play PowerPool HERE, or by clicking the image above!
